FM Shines

FM Shines

FM Shines is a year-round program that offers impactful recognition for individuals and teams. The program provides a menu of resources to help promote diverse and inclusive appreciation and recognition. Any FM staff or UMD community member may nominate an FM staff member or team for recognition or appreciation.

What Is the Difference Between Appreciation and Recognition?

Appreciation is intended to make an employee feel valued and respected. We appreciate others for actions or efforts that fall within a staff member's or team's routine core duties.

Recognition provides positive feedback for actions, performances, or results. We recognize others for actions or efforts that go above or beyond the staff member's or team's routine core duties.

How to Appreciate or Recognize a Staff Member

Appreciation can be shown to any FM employee, team, or unit. There are no prerequisites. Although we are all compensated for executing our job functions, we should appreciate each other’s dedication to executing core job functions. Appreciation does not come with an “award" or "token”. However, through meaningful messages, we can show gratitude for effort and consistency.

We show appreciation for consistency and effort. Our “People Power” comes from the effort and consistency our staff displays every day.

Examples of things we appreciate

  • Effort & Consistency: A staff member submits all monthly reports on time for a six-month period.
  • Consistency: A staff member consistently executes cleaning or maintenance procedures.
  • Effort: A team or work group reduces their work ticket backlog.
  • Consistency: A staff member consistently completes renovation or design projects on schedule.
  • Effort: A team or unit successfully responds to a major snow event or after-hours emergency.

Recognition in FM Shines is based on merit. This includes acts or displays of excellence outside of core job functions, or the extraordinary exemplification of an FM value. Any FM staff member can recognize or appreciate another FM staff member or team. This is not open only to supervisors.
