Snow Season Preparedness: Update from Facilities Management

 Greetings Colleagues,

Welcome to snow season. In anticipation of the weather expected to hit our area this weekend, Facilities Management (FM) is mobilizing our Snow Command Operation. Proactive mobilization ensures we will be ready to address roadway/walkway snow removal and other issues as needed.

When a winter weather event occurs, FM transitions to Snow Command Operations using the FEMA Incident Command System structure. Public safety and operational needs, along with weather conditions and timing, inform the prioritization of response activities. Emergency routes, primary roadways, and critical facilities are addressed first, followed by sidewalks and parking lots with full accessibility restored after the emergency. This applies to academic, administrative, and residential districts on campus and many off-campus locations under a unified command.

If campus and/or local conditions require cancellation of classes and activities, the decision will be made by the Provost. Information regarding campus inclement weather procedures can be found on the UMD website. Updates regarding cancellations and delays will be announced through various channels including:

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to maintaining a safe environment on campus. Stay warm, stay safe, and thank you for your ongoing collaboration.

Sincerely,

Bob
